Dialeteism and mystical experience
Keywords:
mystical experience, ultimate reality, contradictions, dialetheismAbstract
From the point of view of all religions, mystical experience, like other types of experience, has a cognitive value. It allows one to say what is true and what is not true about the ultimate reality, which, in principle, allows one to decide, between diverse religious belief systems, which one is true. However, the variety and contradictoriness of that experience seems to negate its cognitive value. If the mystical experience of different individuals is so varied to the point of being contradictory, it seems that we cannot say anything about what the ultimate reality is really like, and, with this, we cannot say which religious belief system is "the" true one. My proposal in this paper is to show that the diversity and contradictoriness of mystical experience is not a problem for its objectivity because ultimate reality could be both one and contradictory.
