Virtus quærens delectationis: the instrumental value of virtue in Epicurus

The criticism of antiquity and the contemporary age on the Epicurus’ hedonic project, adduce some deficiencies in epistemic and evaluative principles that misinterpret its original meaning. Against this, the criticism of the traditional values and the analysis of desires as characteristics of virtue is a response to the epistemic and evaluation insufficiency that epicurean doctrine possesses. Therefore, in this article the mediatory character of virtue is presented as a justification of pleasure because is content of well-being, this being rejected by many critics of the Samos’ philosopher.
