The True Word According to Kūkai: On Orality and Writing in the Origins of Japanese Philosophy
Keywords:
Kūkai, orality, writing, Japanese PhilosophyAbstract
We often associate ritual with liturgy and tantrism with thaumaturgy. Why, then, look at Kūkai if our interest lies in Japanese philosophy? The most appropriate disciplinary framework to study the writings of Kūkai, from the outset, would be Buddhist studies or Buddhism. Since this is a very broad subject, ranging from the discussion among anthropologists about the so-called "primitive mentality" to the famous question of the "passage from myth to logos", I will focus on the aspect of orality and writing.
