Diogenes of Apollonia and Air as Principle, Intelligence, and God
Keywords:
Diogenes of Apollonia, principle, air, intelligence, godAbstract
This paper aims to review the philosophical proposal of Diogenes of Apollonia, a presocratic thinker. Through the analysis of doxographical testimonies, and fragments of the author, it will explore the philosophical background from which this Ionian philosopher departed (Anaximenes, Heraclitus, the Eleatics, Anaxagoras) and how he manage to own their ideas to develop his own thought, which transcends the mere eclecticism. The goal is to understand how Diogenes conceived air as the sole material principle of reality, which possesses an organizing intelligence within itself that, through its creative, structuring, and vivifying processes, is identified with God.
